David Henderson (Becoming The Best You Can Be)

I mentor & coach CIOs, senior IT managers and business executives. My focus is on the changing role of the CIO, the relationship of the role with other business executives, and on the development of future CIOs. Working with current & aspiring CIOs & other board level executives, I research, commentate, mentor and coach.

My focus is informed by my long career in industry and business consulting. I specialised in developing IT strategies for multinational organisations plus the delivery of transformational change programmes. My day-to-day work was the boardroom agenda for IT. Most recently, I originated and led IBM's 'Evolving Role of the CIO' thought leadership programme, writing and overseeing a series of insightful white papers on the implications and practicalities of the CIO’s rapidly changing role.

In industry, I worked in a number of senior IT delivery and marketing roles with GMIS, the Information Services subsidiary of Grand Metropolitan (now Diageo). This was preceded by eleven years at Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline) Group, working in a range of senior IT positions.

I joined Price Waterhouse Management Consultants (now IBM Global Business Services) in 1987, becoming a partner in 1992. After the 1998 PW/Coopers & Lybrand merger, I led the People agenda for the largest UK practice unit, overseeing the integration of nearly 2,000 consulting staff into a single unit.

I was global head of IT Strategy for PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting. Between 1995 & 2002 I was responsible for quality assurance on major engagements undertaken for clients in consumer products, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing industries.

After IBM’s acquisition of PwC, I led the IBM Technology Strategy practice in the UK, Ireland, Netherlands & South Africa between 2002 and 2005, repositioning it to focus on IT Transformation, Business Value-focused IT Strategy, & Enterprise Architecture. Having positioned this practice as the leading global IBM Technology Strategy unit, I returned full-time to client work, whilst contributing to IBM’s continuing thought leadership.

I retired from IBM in 2010 to concentrate on the CIO agenda in an independent capacity. I am also a trustee at the Christian Association of Business Executives (CABE) and a Workplace Associate at the London Institute of Contemporary Christianity (LICC).
